We created this mobile learning center for the San Mateo County Library system to help connect their libraries and make better use of their outside spaces. When set up at a site, the Lookmobile unfolds into an activity zone that gives library patrons tools to look more closely at the region where they live, making the libraries’ outdoor spaces more welcoming and lively, while also increasing awareness of the diverse municipalities within their shared region.
Our original inspiration were the traveling theaters that arrive as a simple wagon, but unfold to reveal a world of enchantment. Building from an off-the-shelf car trailer, in the sketch below, I integrated both our local/regional awareness pedagogy and exhibits focused on a more sensorial impact. Working with our exhibit developers and artists, I designed the structure.
